Ending the Syrup Syndrome: Change the Sticks

Most change efforts fail because leaders simply pour “change” on top of the same old habits—like syrup over a stack of pancakes. The surface looks different, but underneath it’s still business as usual.

In this engaging keynote, Patrick Thibaudeau exposes the Syrup Syndrome and challenges audiences to rethink how real transformation happens. True change doesn’t come from coating the surface; it comes from mixing new ingredients into the batter from the very beginning.

Through vivid storytelling, practical insight, and research-informed lessons—including work connected to the UC Berkeley Center for the Built Environment—Patrick shows why many change initiatives fade and what it takes to create progress that lasts.

In one memorable moment from this keynote, Patrick even tosses pancakes into the audience—symbolizing the need to throw out the old recipe and commit to bold, meaningful change.
